Please be aware of the following hazards for your pet:

Fall Winter

  • Be sure to provide proper shelter for your pets. If yours is an indoor pet, his bed or crate should be kept in a warm, draft-free area, preferably elevated slightly off the floor. If your pet is kept outdoors, provide a warm insulated pet house or shelter. The house should be elevated enough so that moisture cannot accumulate inside. If possible, provide a "door" (perhaps of canvas) to keep out the winter winds.
  • Never let your dog off the leash on snow or ice, especially during a snowstorm—dogs can lose their scent and easily become lost. More dogs are lost during the winter than during any other season, so make sure yours always wears ID tags or consider having your pet microchipped.
  • Provide your pet with more food so added calories will produce body heat to keep the animal warm and always have fresh, clean water available for your pet. If your pet is kept outdoors, be sure to check his water frequently since it may freeze

Spring/Summer:

  • Maggots
Your outside pet is especially vulnerable. Flies lay eggs in moist area or wounds and maggots are the result. They can be deadly. Keep your pet cool, dry and check regularly for sores.
  • Summer Heat
Do not exercise your pet during hot and humid times, and never leave your pet in a car. Provide cool shelter and plenty of fresh water.
  • Fireworks/thunder
Many pets are extremely fearful of loud noises associated with fireworks and thunder. Keep pets inside during storms and fireworks displays and leave a radio or tv on to provide distraction. Never leave a fearful pet outdoors unattended or take to a fireworks display as these pets experience extreme stress and can injure themselves or run away. Contact us if you feel your pet needs a mild sedative.
  • Choking hazard
Do not leave your dog tied or outside with a choke collar as they can choke to death if caught on something or tangled. The ring can even get caught in a deck and the dog will choke trying to free itself.
  • Pools/Lakes
Never leave your pet unattended when they are swimming and always make sure they have an easy way out or the pool is enclosed and inaccessible.
  • Windows
Whether you live in a private home or an apartment, you'll be tempted to open windows to let in the fresh air. Be sure to keep screens or protective bars on your windows to prevent your pets from escapes or falls. And bird owners should make sure their feathered friends are protected from drafts.
  • Lawn Care
Lawn chemicals can be very toxic if ingested. Try to keep your pet off new fertilized lawns for 24 hours. Always save to original bag for later reference if ingestion occurs. If your pet does ingest these chemicals, contact your veterinarian immediately.
