  • SGAH is one of the best animal hospitals  in the state of New Jersey. Wag On Inn Rescue Group has many of its animals cared for by this well- known institution. The loving, kind staff, as well as excellent and up to date care given to the dogs and cats can not be topped. Wag On Inn Rescue Group recommends Sea Girt Animal Hospital highly and without reservations.

  • I moved to Manasquan 14 years ago and was reluctant to change veterinarians for my dog. When the trip back to Toms River to our veterinarian became too much, I decided to give SGAH a try and so, for 14 years, they have cared for my dog(s) and cat with compassion and expertise. The veterinarians are extremely competent and knowledgeable. I have the utmost confidence in their veterinarians, vet techs and their staff. Maybe I am prejudiced because they have also been so incredibly giving to a local animal rescue group that I fostered puppies for. I am truly "at home" when I walk into the office with my own pet or one that I am fostering (and I have certainly walked through those doors enough that this is like a second home to me). Thanks Sea Girt Animal Hospital for your unwavering commitment to animals and their owners. Thanks for being so warm and kind.

Leptosporosis - Facts All Dog Owners Need to Know

Leptosporosis is an infectious disease of dogs that can cause acute kidney failure. Some may recover after prolonged intensive care in the hospital, while others may not survive or survive with permanent kidney damage. Lepto can also cause liver damage, eye disease, respiratory disease, vasculitis, and bleeding disorders. Lepto is also a zoonotic disease, which means family members and other family pets are at risk for infection.

Lepto is a global disease and is likely present throughout most of the US, except for dry regions. It is more prevalent in warm, wet and humid climates, and certainly is present in our area. Most dogs are exposed to lepto in environments contaminated by the urine of wild animal hosts such as raccoons, opossums, mice, voles, rats, skunks, squirrels, deer and foxes. Any dog with acute kidney failure, unexplained increases in urine output and thirst and signs of liver disease should be tested for lepto.

Leptosporosis is not limited to large breed or outdoor dogs. If a dog goes outdoors they can be exposed.

Many dog owners are concerned about the side effects of the lepto vaccines. Whiles reaction were more common with older vaccines, our newer vaccines are more purified and result in fewer reactions. In selected cases, the vaccine can be given separately from other vaccines to minimize reactions. Studies show that the vaccines offer protection for at least one year. Our practice recommends ALL dogs be vaccinated against this preventable disease. We also recommend a yearly booster after the initial course of vaccines. The vaccine we utilize protects against four strains of lepto common to our area.
